Furthering the challenge they had set themselves, the family acquired old vineyards in Porrera parish with the characteristic slate-and-quartzite soil known as Ilicorella. Clinging to impossibly steep hillsides, these vineyards make the grape harvest a back-breaking task which can only be undertaken by hand under extreme conditions. Grape farming on these slopes is not for the faint-hearted, and the heroic mountain viticulture practised here must rank among the world’s most labour-intensive.

Only the indigenous Garnacha and Cariñena grapes are grown on the Porrera vineyard, on 60- to 90-year-old vines. Yield is low, with each vine producing only about a pound of the grapes which go on to produce Els Igols, the essence of the Priorat.

The Mas de Mustardó vineyard is set in Morera de Montsant parish, at over 2,000 feet above sea level, in the shelter of the Montsant mountains. The clay, chalky soil here lends its distinctive character to the vine stock.

The vineyards surrounding the winery were planted on modern terraces, sharing the space with the existing riverside woodland. Red and White Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the varieties grown here.

Despite the relative proximity to the Mediterranean, the Montsant climate is peculiarly continental in nature, exposing the vines to sharp contrasts in temperature and creating the exceptional interplay of climate, soils and varieties that makes our wines unique.
